Bangalore: The second Karnataka State Sexuality Minorities Annual Convention will be held at the Indian Social Institute (ISI) here from March 18 to 20. Members of three voluntary organisations working on health and human rights issues of sexuality minorities — Sangama, Suraksha and Samara — said at a press conference here on Monday that “mobilisation, collectivisation and empowerment” would be themes of this year’s meet. The convention will bring together sexuality minority communities from across the State to articulate and share their problems and experiences, paving the way for Statewide awareness campaigns. The topics that will be discussed include legal awareness for the community to address harassment at the hands of police, sensitivity of the public and private health systems towards sexuality minorities and violence and harassment from family, the public and society. Sowmya of Samara said that the only response to sexuality minorities from society was one of rejection, ridicule, violence, denial of rights and punishment. They faced harassment at the hands of the police, the health system and educational institutions. The convention will start at the ISI on Benson Road, Benson Town.
