NEW DELHI: The mother of a caddie who died under mysterious circumstances in police custody this past week recorded her statement before a court here on Monday. Babli Devi, mother of Vicky Arya, said in her statement before Magistrate Kuldeep Narayan that an officer of the level of Assistant Commissioner of Police had tried to induce her into withdrawing her allegations by promising jobs for her children. She also told the court that one of her relatives was an eyewitness to the alleged beating up of Vicky by the police which led to his death. Last Wednesday, the Special Staff of the South-West Delhi police had picked up Vicky from the Army Golf Course in connection with a chain-snatching case. According to the police, Vicky complained of a stomach-ache while being taken to the police station, following which he was taken to Safdarjung Hospital where he died. However, Vicky’s family alleged that the police had beaten him up which led to his death. They claimed that they had seen marks of caning on his body before post-mortem. Following the allegations, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) ordered a magisterial inquiry into Vicky’s death. Last Friday the court had summoned the victim’s mother to record her statement.
