JD(S) to constitute executive panel

M. Raghuram

‘The exodus of leaders from the party does not matter’

Bangalore: Janata Dal (Secular) State president Merajuddin Patel has said that the 42-member State Executive Committee will be fully constituted by the end of the month.

Speaking to The Hindu during a function held in the party office here on Monday to usher in two new senior vice-presidents, D.T. Jayakumar and Leeladevi R. Prasad, Mr. Patel said that national party president H.D. Deve Gowda wanted the Executive Committee in place much before the party launched a full-fledged campaign for the coming Assembly elections.

He said the decentralisation process set in motion in January had been completed by the party leadership. “It was a difficult phase as the party leadership had to contend with a few vexing issues, particularly in districts such as Haveri, Bagalkot, Belgaum, Kolar and Chamarajanagar. The party leadership visited all these places and tackled the organisational problems,” he said.

Mr. Patel said two more senior vice-presidents and five vice-presidents would be inducted to manage party affairs in different parts of the State. Ms. Leeladevi Prasad would look after matters pertaining to women, he said.

“It is true that some leaders have left us to join other parties, but they were not accompanied by workers. Since the JD(S) basically is a party developed by grassroots-level workers, the exodus of leaders from the party does not matter,” he said. Leaders from other parties were knocking on the doors of the JD(S), “but we are house full”. Workers were welcome, but there was no place for more leaders, he said.

Earlier, at the function to welcome the new senior vice-presidents, Mr. Patel said that the former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy’s ‘Jaitra Yatra’ had received a rousing reception in those parts of the State that it had visited.
