Jobs for disabled: State asked to file affidavit

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Monday sought to know from the State Government the steps it had taken to help the physically challenged set up small businesses in public places such as bus stands and railway stations.

The court was dealing with a PIL petition seeking a direction to the authorities not to terminate the services of the physically challenged who were manning public telephone booths at bus stands and railway stations.

A Division Bench comprising Justice S.R. Bannurmath and Justice A.N. Venugopal Gowda asked the Government what steps it had taken to help the physically challenged set up businesses such as telephone booths, photocopy machines, newspaper and magazine stalls.

The Government said it had amended the rules relating to providing employment opportunities to the physically challenged. The Bench directed the Government to file an affidavit detailing the measures taken by it to help the physically challenged set up businesses.

The court admitted a petition by Kannada actor Malashree against an order of the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) awarding what she claimed was a meagre compensation of Rs. 59,670.

In her petition, Ms. Malashree claimed that she was in a commanding position in the Kannada film industry in 1996 when a car by which she was travelling from Bagalkot to Bangalore met with an accident.

She said that the accident left her with multiple injuries and that she had to spend upwards of Rs. 2 lakh for treatment.

The actor said she had claimed compensation of Rs. 50 lakh from the MACT.She said after the accident, she could not fully regain fluency in acting and lost lakhs of rupees in earnings.

She urged the court to enhance the compensation amount.

A Division Bench comprising Justice Chidanand Ullal and Justice A.S. Pachhapure adjourned further hearing on the case by two weeks.
