BANGALORE: Governor Rameshwar Thakur on Monday presented medals to 78 police personnel, including a women police inspector who was awarded posthumously, for gallantry, distinguished service and meritorious service.

Sanjeev Somanna Odeyar of Athani in Belgaum district received the Jeevan Suraksha Medal, awarded to civilians, for rescuing three persons from Krishna River while it was in spate. The medals were announced during Independence Day and Republic Day held in 2006 and 2007.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor urged the medal recipients to act as custodians of the police traditions and be role models to those who join the police service. He said the police could not afford to develop an attitude of complacency or casualness at any point of time as it could cause damage not only to officers, but also to society as a whole.

Stressing on the need to bring about a change in police administration, Mr. Thakur said there was need to build a psychological profile of policemen to assign tasks that suited the personnel.
