TIRUPUR: Nearly 50 residents of Nachipalayam, all relatives and friends of a woman who was picked up by the police on charges of being a commercial sex worker, on Monday besieged the All Women Police Station here seeking her release.
Neighbours of the woman charged the police with foisting a false case against an innocent woman. After staging protest for nearly half-an-hour, the protesters sought the intervention of the Revenue Divisional Officer.
However, the police denied the allegation. The woman was remanded to judicial custody.
The police said that they had formed two teams to conduct raids at the old bus stand and railway station following complaints from some quarters over prostitution. On Sunday, the teams arrested eight women and three brokers on the charge of indulging in flesh trade.
