Handloom exhibition inaugurated

THANJAVUR: On an average, Rs.2.50 crore worth of silk saris are produced in a month in the district, Collector C. Vijayaraj Kumar said here on Sunday.

Inaugurating a special handloom exhibition-2008 at Ramanathan Chettiar Hall, he said a sales target of Rs.25 lakh had been fixed for the exhibition, which would last till March 30.

Rebate varying from 20 per cent to 55 per cent would be given. More than 50 weavers co-operative societies were participating in the exhibition, he added.

According to V. Kandasamy, Assistant Director, Handlooms, Venkatagiri cotton saris, Kovai Chiko cotton saris, Madurai saris, Paramakudi art silk saris, Salem silk dhoti, Ammapettai dhotis, Kurinjipadi lungis, Chennimalai and Erode bed sheets, pillow covers, Bavani bed sheets, Arni silk saris, Thirubuvanam silk saris, Thiruchengode towels and Aruppukotai lungis were on display at the special exhibition.
