OPWWU holds demonstration

BERHAMPUR: Members of the Berhampur unit of the Orissa Pipe Water Workers’ Union (OPWWU) held demonstration in the city on Monday demanding the State Government to fulfil their demands.

Led by vice-president of the union Rabi Panigrahy and its divisional secretary Ambari Jena, they stageda dharna in front of the office of the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC), Southern Division. The union was opposed to appointment of large number of persons by the department on contract-basis. The workers wanted the State Government to make all casual employees involved in drinking water supply in rural and urban areas of the State, permanent staff.

The leaders of the union alleged that although drinking water supply was an essential service yet the workers of this sector were not provided proper facilities by the State Government. They wanted all vacancies in the departments involved in drinking water supply to be filled soon. The other demands of the union, included hike in the dress allowance for class III and class IV employees and job one of the family members of employees, who die while in service. The workers threatened to intensify the throughout the State if the State Government did not heed to their demands.
