Apropos the news, “Importance of English,” inculcated by the HR&CE Minister (The Hindu, dated 7.3.2008), it is a laudable suggestion benefiting the students’ employment opportunities. Learning English should be given importance from the school level. Then only students joining higher educational institutions will face no difficulty in expressing their thoughts in English. School syllabus should include a number of story books, biographies, novels and short essays. Eminent authors such as Macaulay, Dickens, Jane Austen, George Eliot etc., should be included in English syllabus. Only dedicated and competent teachers should handle the discipline. Nowadays, English is taught by teachers who do not have the knowledge of phonetics, depth in modern grammar. Only graduates from English literature having taste in literature should be considered for appointment as English teachers. M.S. Sankaran, Palani. Teach traffic rules in schoolsIndia tops first rank in loss of lives in traffic accidents. Tamil Nadu stands second to Maharashtra in loss of lives in accidents every year. Though several other aspects contribute to this, the basic reason is that we do not teach our children from childhood onwards safe use the road. Unless the pupils at the elementary level are taught traffic rules and regulations, the future generation will lack traffic sense. It is, therefore, essential that the Tamil Nadu Government brings a suitable order to include traffic rules and regulations right at the elementary education itself and continue this subject at the higher level also. Haji Asmabagh Anvarden, Ramanathapuram. Increasing price of gold and silverThe prices of gold and silver are on the rise every day. This is said to be because of online trading. There is widespread speculation that online trading is controlled by the political heavyweights and black money holders who have been indulging in purchasing large quantity of gold and silver and storing them up making an artificial demand and forcing price rise of these metals every day. The Union Government remains a silent spectator. It has not taken any action to check price rise of these metals. G. Nagasamy, Ramanathapuram. Expedite broad gauge conversionThe railway budget is good in parts. The passenger fare has not been raised. That is fair indeed. The AC fare reduction in a marginal manner has a commercial motive. It is to ensure a better occupancy rate as the AC berths and seats are not being fully utilised. It is true the passenger train fare is half of the bus fare. It is also true that passenger trains are heavily crowded and the comfort level is abysmally poor. It is disappointing that no serious steps are mooted to reduce or stamp out the menace of beggars and hawkers in passenger trains. Consequently, the compartments are always dirty and dusty. The people of the Sivaganga region have been waiting for ages for the completion of the broad gauge conversion of this sector so as to have an easy and convenient rail link to the State capital. The budget is silent on this long-pending demand. G.K.S. Kandasubramanian, Sivaganga.
