Jamuna’s remarks lead to ruckus

Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh Speaker, Ishwardas Rohani, on Monday adjourned the House for 10 minutes when some BJP members lodged a protest against Opposition Leader Jamuna Devi’s observation at a Kisan-Majdoor-Adivasi convention in Seoni-Malwa about the State Government’s much publicised Ladli-Laxmi Yojna.

According to reports, Ms. Jamuna Devi said at the convention: “The Chief Minister keeps talking about ‘Ladli-Lakshmi’ (the girl child), what if she decides to elope?” The Ladli-Laxmi Yojna is a Government-sponsored insurance scheme to benefit the girl child.

During Zero Hour, BJP MLA Sudha Jain was the first to raise the issue. She was joined by Minister Kusum Mehdele and others in targeting Ms. Jamuna Devi. The Congress members were not ready to concede. From their side, Sajjan Singh Verma and Arif Aqueel were prominent among those who stood up in defence of the Opposition Leader. Many charges were hurled while ruling MLAs began raising slogans and asking Ms. Jamuna Devi to apologise.

Expunged

Much of what was said in the House was expunged by the Speaker before he adjourned the House for 10 minutes. When it re-assembled, a few ruling party MLAs, including Minister Narottam Mishra tried to keep the issue alive but the Speaker could restore order and regular proceedings continued.
