Resolve certificate issue, Govt. told

Staff Correspondent

Vidhan Sabha adjourned sine die

DEHRA DUN: The Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha was adjourned sine die on Monday after the Speaker, Harbans Kapoor, directed the Government to coordinate with the Centre to resolve the contentious domicile and caste certificates issue.

The Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party members had expressed dissatisfaction over the recommendations made by the all-party committee on the issue and sought an extension of the committee to study similar provisions in other States and arrive at a conclusion with the interests of Uttarakhand in mind.

The Congress and the BSP members had boycotted the Budget session for four days after vociferous protests to seek restoration and implementation of the earlier system of issuing these certificates did not evoke a satisfactory response from the Government. The earlier system was restored and the Opposition returned to the House last Monday.

The controversial Uttarakhand Universities Bill, 2008, was referred to a select committee as sought by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prakash Pant after agitated members felt that the Bill aimed at curtailing the autonomy of the Universities.

Earlier, the House witnessed uproarious scenes as slogan-shouting members of the Congress entered the well of the House.
