Kanwar Yogendra

The tragedy occurred due to a massive landslide

SHIMLA: More than 25 people were feared to have been buried alive in a massive landslide, triggered by melting snow in the higher reaches of the hills, at Nehru Kund near the famous tourist resort of Manali in Himachal Pradesh late on Monday evening.

The police and local administration have launched rescue operations but were experiencing great difficulty due to darkness and cold, said the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Manali, Vinay Thakur.

Six bodies had been recovered so far and eight persons with serious injuries rescued.

Nehru Kund is a popular tourist spot on the Kullu-Rohtang road, 6 km from Manali. Famous for some downstream hot springs, it is named after the country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

According to the police, the exact number of people buried could not be ascertained immediately. There were at least 40 kiosks catering to tourists where the landslide occurred.
