What they say
S. Ramakrishnan
S. Ramakrishnan, State Chief Information Commissioner:
The RTI Act promotes transparency making corruption and malpractice difficult. People cannot ask for action to solve a problem but they can use the Act to get important information on why the issue has not been addressed. It is like getting officials to bear witness against themselves. I would urge people to keep their questions to the point and simple, so that public information officers can process the petition quickly. When appeal petitions come to us and if the petitioner’s appeal is justified, we order the organisation to comply through post. If there is a need to hear both parties, the State Information Commission holds an inquiry. Since 2006, we have held about 1,800 inquiries and fines levied in about 100 cases.
