Dirty colony

The Thideer Nagar Housing Board Colony near Periyar bus stand looks shabby and dirty. The surroundings are being spoiled by the occupants themselves. Visitors to the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation hotel opposite this colony wonder how the authorities established such a colony on such a prime location. As the colony is being evacuated, it is necessary to construct a modern bus stand, as an annexe to the Periyar bus stand. There is a proposal, it is learnt, for a flyover to pass through this place connecting the Ellis Nagar ROB under construction.

Property tax

The sudden increase in milk prices has brought a rise tea and coffee prices at tea stalls and hotels. The recent announcement of increase in property tax for houses, commercial buildings and office buildings increases the financial burden of common man and business community. Already people find it very difficult to build houses owing to increase in prices of cement and other construction materials. Hence, threatening the people in many ways in the day to-day life will create a bad image of the DMK Government and consequences echoed in the next Assembly Elections. Hence, the Government should reconsider the abnormal rise in property tax and go for some marginal increase.

Bad road

The stretch of the busy road between Othakadai and Melur Sandhaipettai (weekly market) is in a bad condition. Numerous buses use this stretch, serving Othakadai, Narasingampatti, Kathapatti, Therkutheru and Melur and beyond. Two wheeler riders and other motorists find it difficult to negotiate this stretch. I request the authorities to take up patch up work immediately.

Ban praiseworthy

Public meetings, dharnas and demonstrations were conducted by political parties and other organisations near the Tallakulam Head Post Office and Telephone Exchange. This nuisance caused hardships to the smooth functioning of both these offices. Many representations sent to stop this menace ended in vain. But, fortunately, demonstrations and meetings have been banned from being conducted in front of Central Government offices in Tallakulam area. We thank the police officers and others who took sincere efforts to ban them.

Platform ticket

People spend a few minutes to send off their friends and relatives at the railway station. But at Madurai Junction, one finds a long queue in front of all booking counters. Since the crowd will be more during peak hours between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., the administration may authorise ‘platform ticket vendors’ to sell only platform tickets on commission basis or at the rate of Rs.3.25/ 3.50 per ticket for which the buyers won’t hesitate to pay extra at the time of urgency and necessity. Wards of railway employees awaiting a regular appointment on compassionate grounds may be selected for this platform ticket vendor post. By this, additional facility for passengers could be provided and unemployment problem of wards of railway employees could be solved.

‘Agni theertham’

Recently, I visited Rameswaram to perform my father’s ‘thithi.’ When I took bath in ‘Agni Theertham,’ I came in contact with dirt, refuse, stinky perishables and pieces of cloth. Is it fair that these were not removed? It is the duty of the Rameswaram local body or temple authorities to clean the ‘theertham’ at periodic intervals. As devotees conduct various rituals in it, it is essential to keep the ‘theertham’ clean.

Level crossing

Both sides of the approach road to the Sellur-Thathaneri railway level crossing are damaged and calls for immediate repairs. It is difficult for two wheelers and motorists to cross the level crossing because of potholes and narrow ditches between the rail tracks. While repairing, the railways may lay titles between the tracks as in the case of Tirupparankundaram level crossing. This will be beneficial to the public, especially to riders of two wheelers.

Flight service

Since Madurai is not linked to New Delhi by a direct flight service, people transit through Chennai. Madurai is a famous international tourist spot and business centre and is going to be a major IT city in future. Hence a direct flight to New Delhi is needed. A private airline is operating a daily service from Chennai that arrives Madurai at 8.10 a.m. and departs for Chennai at 8.40 a.m. There is an evening service also, arriving Madurai at 20.25 hours and departing for Chennai at 20.55 hours. To provide a direct link from Madurai to New Delhi via Chennai, these services can be converted into ‘Chennai-Madurai (departure 8.40 a.m) – Delhi via Chennai” service to reach Delhi at 14.00 hrs daily. In the return direction, it can start at 15.00 hrs at Delhi as “Delhi-Chennai-Madurai (departure @20.55 Hrs) – Chennai” service to halt at Chennai at 22.15 hrs.

Milk price

The price of the Aavin milk has been increased. They have no moral right to increase the price when the quality of milk supplied by them is far below the standard mentioned in their own sachet. It has been admitted by the management. In the wake of several complaints from consumers, the management has initiated steps to rigidly test the milk purchased from the societies. When the milk supplied by them is sub-standard as admitted by them, they have no moral right to increase the retail price without increasing the quality. Prior to Aavin days, milk was supplied in cans by street hawkers. At that time, health inspectors used to pounce upon them and take samples for testing. If the milk was found to be sub-standard, stringent penal actions were taken. Now, who could initiate steps such as this?

Overspeeding lorries

Residents of Koodal Nagar Housing Board (sector I & II), Jayalalitha Nagar and Tamil Nagar have been indirectly hit following the construction of the road over-bridge at Koodal Nagar. Lorries with heavy loads from Food Corporation of India, plying hitherto through the main road, have changed their route and take the roads through the residential localities. The lorry drivers, who overspeed through these colonies, conveniently forgot that this is a residential area teeming with schools and students. A directive may be issued to lorry owners to utilise an alternative route, enabling the residents to protect themselves from road accidents.
