Green Awards presented

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said here on Monday that the proposed legislation to protect wetlands and paddy fields would be moved in the Assembly only after addressing the concerns and apprehensions expressed by various sections. Delivering the valedictory address at a one-day nature education programme for Secretarial staff organised by the Kerala State Biodiversity Board, he said the Bill would be suitably amended before being tabled in the House.

“Protection of the environment is high on the agenda of the Government. But conservation programmes should be scientifically designed and should not impact on the lives of the people,” he said.

The Chief Minister gave away the Green awards 2007 instituted by the Biodiversity Board for outstanding contribution to nature conservation.

The Green Individual Award was conferred on John C. Jacob of Mandur, Kannur for his role in promoting conservation and environmental education. The award comprises a cash prize of Rs. 50,000.

B.K. Sen of Government LPS, Venjaramood, was presented the Green School Teacher Award of Rs.25,000 for creating awareness of nature conservation and environment protection among children. The Sree Saradadevi Centenary Memorial Sisuvihar Upper Primary School at Vazhuthacaud, Thiruvananthapuram, received the Green School Award of Rs.50,000 for promoting nature conservation programmes.
