Geo-information centre launched

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Centre for Geo-Information Science and Technology at the University of Kerala — a facility that aims to create infrastructure to manage digital geo-spatial data — was inaugurated by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Monday.

The prime objective of the Centre is to bring together geo-spatial data generated by various government agencies on a common digital platform so that this data can be integrated and used for scientific, socio-economic and planning purposes. In his inaugural address, Mr. Achuthanandan said spatial data should be utilised to identify and tackle natural disasters such as floods and forest fires. It should be possible to use such data for decentralised development.
