KOCHI: The women’s wing of the World Malayali Council has started a project called ‘Pariraksha’ for mother and child care through government hospitals. The project aims to help the poor access quality health care. The condition of labour rooms, maternity wards and post-natal care units in government hospitals will be improved, Indira Rajan, president of the women’s wing of the council, said. The government has given its nod for the project in principle. The organisation has already renovated the Thiruvalla taluk headquarters hospital at a cost of Rs.6 lakh. Nearly 150 babies were being delivered at the hospital a month. It had a deplorable labour room with broken or makeshift labour cots. Pariraksha renovated the place in 20 days by remodelling the room into an air-conditioned one with a halogen spotlight and modern floor and wall tiles. Stainless steel labour cots and a unit for taking care of premature babies were also provided. There will be at least one project each in every district.
