‘Selection of beneficiaries in gram sabha a must’

Staff Reporter

Kakinada: District Collector M. Subrahmanyam has said that beneficiaries of all welfare schemes being implemented by the government should have been endorsed by the village panchayats. The Indiramma housing scheme, which largely caters to the rural population, is no exception, he says.

Addressing a review meeting on Indiramma and ‘Aam Admi Bima Yojana’ programmes, Mr. Subrahmanyam said that the District Manager of the State Housing Corporation should ensure that the beneficiaries of the Indiramma scheme were selected in gram sabhas as per the norms, failing which the ineligible people would try to exploit the situation, causing wastage of resources.

Crucial role

The mandal-level housing officers play a crucial role in inspecting the works-in-progress and releasing payments at different stages of the construction of houses. All spill over works should be completed by this month-end. Construction of phase-III houses should be expedited, the Collector added.

As regards the Bima Yojana, he said the beneficiaries should be selected from the landless poor, including agricultural labourers, who possess white ration cards or job cards provided under the NREGP.
