House burgled: police launch hunt for maid

Staff Reporter

MALAPPURAM: A house at Kavungal, near here, was burgled in the early hours of Tuesday. The police said gold ornaments and cash were stolen from the house after the four members of the family, including a 40-day-old infant, were drugged. The police suspect the involvement of a domestic help employed in the house who is reportedly missing after the incident.

Meempat Puthiyakunnathu Somansundaran, 63; his wife Renuka, 56; daughter Lakshmi, 28; and her 40-day-old daughter Malavika were found unconscious in their house on Tuesday. They were brought to the District Cooperative Hospital here at 11 a.m. by their relatives. The child was later shifted to Moulana Hospital at Perinthalmanna. Hospital sources said their condition was stable.

The police said the domestic help, a woman hailing from Tamil Nadu, was employed by the family a few days ago. They suspect that she gave them juiced laced with drugs before decamping with the loot.
