Withdraw order on labour welfare boards: Jayalalithaa
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The State government should immediately withdraw its order bringing labour welfare boards under the control of the Revenue Department, AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa, said on Tuesday.
Terming the move anti-labour, she said it would cause hardship to lakhs of workers in the non-formal sector, apart from “snatching” the rights of labour unions.
Noting that the Labour Department had been established for safeguarding the unions’ rights and securing settlement in tune with labour laws, she said the transfer of its functions to the Revenue Department was neither just nor acceptable.
If the workers, who were on daily wages, had to meet village administrative officers for registration and there were delays in meeting them, their earnings would come down.
Besides, the Revenue Department was overburdened. Enrolment of workers and implementation of labour welfare schemes would certainly face delays, Ms. Jayalalithaa added.
