Students find physics paper tough

Sangeeth Kurian

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Higher secondary and vocational higher secondary students who wrote the physics examination on Tuesday are apprehensive that their performance at the examination will adversely affect their prospects in appearing for the entrance examination for professional courses.

“The questions were too tough and indirect,” said Fathima Anzia, a student of Haji C.H. Mohammed Koya Memorial Vocational Higher Secondary School in the city. “We were well-prepared but the questions were very tough.”

She is worried if she can secure the minimum 50 per cent marks required for writing the entrance examination.

S. Sasikumar, who teaches physics at the school, agrees: “The questions appear as if they were set to show the erudition of the person who prepared them. It will take some time even for a subject expert to grasp the idea of the questions.” There is a guideline on the number of questions to be asked from each chapter. But this requirement has not been followed, he said. According to him, out of the total 60 marks, nearly eight marks were for questions based on sections omitted by the State Council for Educational Research and Training. B.K. Vijayan, Secretary, Board of Higher Secondary Examination, said the students need not worry about the results. “During the scheme finalisation, we will take note of the indirect questions and award marks accordingly,” he said.
