TIRUVARUR: Members of the Bharathiya Janata Party (BJP), led by the Tiruvarur district secretary Murugesan, took out a model car procession of Sri Thyagarajaswamy temple on Tuesday.
An elephant brought from Thirupugalur temple to take part in the procession was taken into custody by the Tiruvarur police as the elephant was brought withour proper documents.
So, the police sent the pachyderm to a place near Arooran Thirumana Mandapam near the temple and kept it with security.
BJP members took out the model car procession on Old Nagai Street, Vijayapuram Agraharam, Marimmankoil and Ellaiamman Street.
They did not enter the main streets, i.e., North, South, East and West, where Collector M.Chandrasekaran had clamped Section 144 prohibiting any procession.
They claimed that the car festival of Tiruvarur should be held only in Panguni Ayilyam as per the agama but the Government was not following it.
With a view to emphasise their point, they took out the procession. They said that similar model cars were coming from seven places where Thyagarajaswamy temple is located (Sapthavidangasthalams) (Nagapattinam, Vedaranyam, Thirukuvalai, Thirukaravasal, Tiruvarur, Thirnallar, Thiruvoimoor) to Tiruvarur.
A meeting of sadhus will be held on March 20.
