Strike enters fifth day; affected girls of Government College for Women threaten ‘mass suicide’

Delay in results among the issues raised by students

Students have also launched a letter campaign

KOLAR: The alleged negligence by the Government College for Women here and Bangalore University has reportedly put the future of a large number of students of the college in the lurch.

Apart from the delay in announcing results, several other problems such as non issue of marks cards, blunders in marks cards, including change in names of students, non entry of internal assessment marks, etc., have frustrated both the students and their parents.

The threat of suicide issued by the affected students is a pointer to the gravity of the crisis, it is said. The students of the college launched an indefinite strike on Thursday and also started a letter campaign expressing dissatisfaction over the issue.

In the cards addressed to the vice-chancellor of the university, the students threatened to commit suicide if their problem was not solved properly.

“Though the problem cropped up in 2005, it has not been solved till date,” B. Suresh Gowda, district unit president of the Vidyarthi Janata Dal (Secular), which is spearheading the agitation, told The Hindu.

Crux of problem

While some of the students who have completed their degree courses comprising six semesters were yet to secure their fourth semester marks statement, students studying in the sixth semester have not yet got the marks card of the second semester. Though many students have completed their BBM course in the college, they have not received marks cards of 4th semester. This has become a hurdle in applying for jobs. “We have been put to mental agony for no fault of ours,” said a student Sowmya. “Every time the examinations are held such problems arise due to the irresponsible behaviour of the university authorities,” she alleged.

According to students, though it has been more than four months since applications were submitted afresh for marks cards, they have not received their’s yet.

On enquiry, it came to light that their applications along with demand drafts were not sent to the university authorities by the lecturers entrusted with the task.

Apart from the authorities of the college, the Examination and Evaluation wing of the university was mainly responsible for the fiasco, it was alleged.

Vain efforts

The students have brought all these aspects to the notice of Eranna, joint director of Collegiate Education, who visited the college recently. Mr. Eranna’s assurance had created hopes among the students. But they turned out to be false since some marks cards received after the agitation was launched do not include internal assessment marks sending shock waves among students.

On knowing the severity of the agitation, the university authorities have convened a meeting on Monday in Bangalore. MLC and Syndicate member of Bangalore University Y.A. Narayanaswamy also discussed the issue with the authorities.

The university registrar is believed to have admitted the lapses committed by both college and university authorities.

He also promised to initiate action against the culprits and issue the marks cards shortly.

Notwithstanding the appeal by the authorities that the agitation be withdrawn, the students are adamant on continuing the strike.

“Until and unless all the students get justice and the three-year-old problem is solved once and for all, the strike will not be called off,” Mr. Suresh Gowda said.
