This Day That Age
A Vanguard rocket, carrying a tiny earth satellite, was launched in Cape Canaveral (Florida) on March 17. It was the third attempt at a full-scale firing, although several other launchings were called off at the last minute through technical hitches. The Navy had warned in advance that the firing was primarily a test of the three-stage rocket and there was no certainty the man-made moon would successfully be placed in orbit. After the first Vanguard blew up on its launching pad last December 6 the army was given the go ahead and on January 31, successfully launched Explorer 1 with the Jupiter-C rocket which is still circling the globe. The Vanguard broke from its launching stand and sent out a trailer of white smoke as part of the rocket was seen to break away.
