UNVEILED: Governor Rameshwar Thakur unveils the mascot, Chandu, for the first National Youth Games in Bangalore on Tuesday. Also seen is K. Govindraj, President KOA. BANGALORE: The build up to the first ever National Youth Games began with the Governor of Karnataka, H.E Rameshwar Thakur, launching the mascot, Chandu, a male deer and the logo, a silhouette of a young boy and girl, for the games to be held in Bangalore from May 11 to 18. The Governor said it was a proud moment for Karnataka and a privilege to host the inaugural event. Violin maestro Dr. L Subramaniam will compose the signature tune. The Games will witness the participation of 6000 athletes from various States, associations and federations. There will be 700 delegates in attendance and 1000 volunteers. Athletes participating in this event will vie for a spot in the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune in October this year. A World level event — the Youth Olympic Games — is being staged in Singapore in 2010. Bangalore will be staging a mega athletic event for the first time since 1997 when the National Games were staged here and at Mysore. The schedule involves 17 different venues and will include floodlit contests also. The organising committee also plans to have cultural programmes. The inauguration and the closing ceremony will be held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium.
