Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: The week-long mega free artificial limbs’ fixation camp that ended at Berhampur stadium on Tuesday created a record in eastern region.

As per the Marwari Yuva Manch (MYS) of the city, which has conducted the camp, highest number of artificial limbs were attached to beneficiaries at this camp in comparison to similar camps held in eastern region in the past.

The Ganjam district administration, Red Cross society and Sarva Sikshya Abhiyan also helped in holding the camp. A total of 604 beneficiaries were fitted with 669 ‘Jaipur foot’ type ultra-modern artificial limbs for free.

Till now a camp organised at Baripada in Mayurbhanj district happened to be the biggest artificial limb fixation camp in Orissa.

It was also organised by the MYS. About 505 physically challenged persons were fitted with artificial limbs at Baripada camp.

The MYS has till date held 15 camps in the State and provided free artificial limbs to 2,252 beneficiaries.

It is planning to set up a permanent artificial limbs centre in Bhubaneswar. More than 1,350 physically challenged were registered for the Berhampur camp. After medical check up 172 polio affected were found to be fit for corrective surgery, which could give proper mobility to their limbs.

Of them 119 are of age below 19 years. President of the MYS Bajrang Sharma said these selected polio affected persons would be part of the free corrective surgery camp to be organised by their organisation at Karanjia in Mayurbhanj district. It may be noted that such corrective surgery costs more than Rs. 20,000.

The concluding session of the camp was attended by State Health Minister Sanatan Bisi and State Minister for Women and Child Welfare Pramila Mallik, Ganjam District Collector V.K. Pandian and State office-bearers of the MYS.

The beneficiaries attached with new limbs also marched to the tunes of a band amidst display of fireworks to show up their joy.
