Turmoil in Jharkhand Assembly

Over UPA’s reluctance in naming its candidate for Rajya Sabha polls

Ranchi: Unhappy over the ruling UPA not declaring its official candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls, the Opposition on Tuesday created a ruckus in the Jharkhand Assembly forcing the Speaker to adjourn House for half-an-hour.

Replying to demands of the Opposition to know which of the three -- Parimal Nathwani, Kishore Lal and R.K. Anand -- had the UPA support for the two Rajya Sabha seats from the State, Chief Minister Madhu Koda said there was still time to ponder over it.

“Don’t worry. The UPA is united and its candidate will win the Rajya Sabha seat. Hands down, there is still a day or two left and the UPA candidate will be known soon,” Mr. Koda said, while hinting that the coalition may announce its candidate on Wednesday.

Mr. Koda’s reply came after the Opposition raised a din over the JMM leader Durga Soren, son of JMM supremo Shibu Soren, doubting the integrity of his own party MLAs during a speech at a rally here.

The Janata Dal(U) MLA Radhakrishna Kishore also told Mr. Koda that the NDA fielded only one candidate, J.P.N. Singh, and demanded who among the three others -- Parimal Nathwani, Kishore Lal and R.K. Anand -- had the UPA support.

Filing his nomination as an independent from Jharkhand, the Ahmedabad-based group president (corporate affairs) of the Reliance Industries Limited, Parimal Nathwani, got 11 of the 17 ruling JMM MLAs and a BJP MLA, Tala Marandi, as his proposers.

Former Rajya Sabha member R.K. Anand had ten MLA-proposers, including five RJD MLAs, when he filed papers as Independent. -- PTI
