ALAPPUZHA: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State president P.K. Krishnadas has said that the time is ripe for the formation of a third alternative in Kerala’s political scene. The BJP was working towards this, he said. Speaking to reporters after visiting rain-affected paddy fields in Kuttanad here on Tuesday, Mr. Krishnadas said the existing political fronts in the State, the Left Democratic Front and the United Democratic Front, were “anti-public” and that the BJP would try to put together a democratic third alternative, which would be pro-people. The BJP was ready for talks on the alternative with everyone barring the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Congress, he said. Social organisations and organisations representing particular communities, small or big, had a major role to play in the formation of the alternative. Parties like the Nationalist Congress Party too were welcome for talks. However, no formal talks had been held with any organisation on the issue so far, Mr. Krishnadas said, adding that the three-day State leadership conference of the BJP, which began here this morning, would discuss the alternative at length. The three-day conference, which is being attended by the top-level leadership of the BJP’s State unit, was inaugurated by BJP ideologue and secretary Balbir Punj in the presence of BJP joint secretary V. Sateesh. State leaders, including Mr. Krishnadas, C.K. Padmanabhan, O. Rajagopal, P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, A.N. Radhakrishnan and others were present. The conference, which will continue on Wednesday and Thursday as well, is learnt to have discussed on Tuesday the violent episodes in Kannur, the BJP’s functioning and status in Kerala and the party’s future action plans for the State.
