15 minutes of exam time wasted

Invigilators ask students to produce college identity cards

DAVANGERE`: As many as 15 minutes of examination time was wasted, as “uninformed” invigilators asked students to produce their college identity cards for verification at the A.R.G. College here on Tuesday.

The invigilators demanded identity cards from many students, who were taken in by surprise.

The students only showed their admission tickets instead.

They told the invigilators that they had not been instructed to bring their identity cards, since the admission tickets were embossed with their photographs. The invigilators reportedly argued saying that the admission tickets were insufficient to prove their identity.

Later, the college authorities consulted Deputy Director of the Pre-University Education Department Chowdappa, who reportedly told the invigilators not to demand identity cards.

He also reminded the college authorities that an order was issued recently directing them not to demand identity cards from students, as admission tickets were sufficient to validate their identity.

Reserve time

Although the problem was sorted out with the intervention of the pre-university board authorities, many students lost precious examination time.

Mr. Chowdappa told The Hindu that a reserve time of 30 minutes had been provided for, and directed the college authorities to provide students 10 minutes of extra time.

He said he would send another circular to colleges on Tuesday directing the authorities to verify only admission tickets.

One student from Harpanahalli was debarred from the examination, he added.
