Seeking attention: Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan leading a demonstration near the Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday protesting against water and power crisis in the Capital. NEW DELHI: Led by their senior leaders, Bharatiya Janata Party workers attempted to “gherao” the Delhi Assembly on Tuesday before they were arrested by the police. The BJP members were protesting against “failure” of the Delhi Government and demanding resignation of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. The protesters were led by Delhi unit president Harsha Vardhan, former Union Minister Vijay Goel and Leader of Opposition Jagdish Mukhi. According to Dr. Vardhan, the Congress Government had failed on all counts of providing basic amenities to the public. “This government is lying every day. There is a great difference between its performance and prophesy. It is trying to mislead the citizens of the Capital into believing that it is performing well by means of falsified figures and facts,” he stated. Dr. Vardhan said all claims of Delhi being an international city were baseless. “The Delhi Government is not able to supply water to even the Prime Minister’s residence. The poor condition of traffic is largely responsible for the increasing incidents of road rage. They have been completely ineffective on the issues of education, health, roads, transport, power, water, rural development, inflation and uplift of the poor.” Addressing the gathering, Prof. Mukhi said the people had lost trust in the government. “Ms. Dikshit’s government has been repeatedly bungling on issues of public significance. Even after recommendations of various agencies, no enquiry has been initiated in cases of power and smart card discrepancies. There is a dire scarcity of water despite the Chief Minister claiming through advertisements that there was a surplus of water in Delhi.”
