Classical status: Centre flayed for delay

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday once again saw the reiteration of the demand to declare Telugu as a classical language. Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, R. Chandrasekhar Reddy (TDP) flayed the Government for not taking a decision on the issue although all documents had been submitted and the Andhra Pradesh Assembly had passed a resolution to this effect.

“The political attitude of the Government in neglecting Telugu and extending the status of classical language to others is deplorable. This is an insult to Telugu pride,” said Mr. Reddy who regretted that he was unable to speak in his mother tongue in the House due to the lack of translators. Calling on the Government to come out with all the details in this regard, the TDP leaders conceded that Kannada also deserved the status.
