Forest fires extinguished

BANGALORE: Forest fires in 12 different places in the Western Ghats have been extinguished, according to Principal Chief Conservator of Forests A.K. Varma.

Talking to presspersons during a programme here on Tuesday, Mr. Varma said forest fires were mainly caused to human activity. Some fires were deliberately started while others were caused by negligence. These fires usually did not cause much harm but they were a nuisance.

The Forest Department had taken up awareness programmes in villages bordering forests to check fires, he said. — Special Correspondent
