DEHRA DUN: The Uttarakhand Government will hold the urban local bodies elections on April 19. This has been stated by the State counsel before the Uttarakhand High Court in Naini Tal in response to summons on various petitions including that of the State Election Commission. According to a senior official of the Urban Development Ministry, the notification for the polls would be issued on March 20. A spokesman of the State Election Commission said that it was ready for conducting the polls as desired by the High Court. The Commission had approached the Court to seek early elections as the term of the local bodies had expired and several aspirants had expressed concern after the local bodies were placed under administrators. Meanwhile, hectic lobbying has begun for the ticket for the mayor’s election in Dehra Dun by aspirants in the Congress and the BJP. Though the BJP has been working for a victory in these polls for over a month now, the Congress seems to be drawing much strength from the fact that its nominee Satpal Maharaj was defeated only due to the postal ballots cast for the BJP nominee, T.P.S. Rawat, in the Pauri Lok Sabha seat by-elections recently. “We are sure to bag a good number of seats in the local bodies if the nature of polling in the Pauri Lok Sabha seat by-poll is any indication,” said Uttarakhand PCC president Yashpal Arya.
