Better coordination needed to tackle naxal menace

Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW: Better coordination, including intelligence sharing and joint operations, is to be established between the police and security forces of the States affected by naxalite violence. A meeting of the Naxal Task Force comprising representatives of eight States, including Uttar Pradesh, here on Tuesday discussed the modalities of the coordinated strategy for dealing with the naxalite problem.

The two-day meeting is being held on the directives of the Union Government.

Special Secretary (Internal Security) in the Union Home Ministry, M. L. Kumawat, said that for anti-naxal operations the Government wanted synergy between the police forces of the States. The synergy was lacking earlier, he said. Mr. Kumawat said the Naxal Task Force was constituted by the Centre for better coordination among the police and suggest measures to tackle the problem.

Briefing newsmen, he referred to the Nayagarh operation by the security personnel of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and CRPF and the joint action in Chhattisgarh, and said the success was possible due to better synergy. Mr. Kumawat said a strategy for coordinated action along with interaction between the police force would evolve from the Lucknow meeting. He said the naxal outfits showed better coordination among them.

Stating that those engaged in naxalite activities had been misled, Mr. Kumawat said the development initiative was an antidote for the malaise, as such the Union Government and the State Governments had launched several development measures, particularly in areas which have no roads and bridges. He said about Rs.1,000 crore had been given to the States under this head. Lucknow is hosting the meeting for the first time. Besides UP, representatives from Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, West Bengal and Jharkhand are participating in the meeting which concludes on Wednesday.
