Assault on Sub-Inspector: one student granted bail

Special Correspondent

“Students should maintain discipline and dignity”

Painful that petitioners indulged in violent activities: Judge

CHENNAI: Granting bail to a city law college student in a case relating to alleged assault on a Sub-Inspector (SI) near Kuralagam here on March 6, the Madras High Court has said students should maintain discipline and dignity.

“They must realise their responsibilities and obligations to their parents, who have spent their hard-earned money for their education,” Justice K.N. Basha said in his order.

B. Meenakshisundaram and K.S. Raju, final year law students arrested in the case, submitted there was a wordy quarrel between them and the Sub-Inspector, and they were falsely implicated in the case. They had to attend the practical examination in March. If they were not released on bail, they would be put to great hardship and their career spoiled.

In his order, Mr. Justice Basha said it was painful and alarming to note that the petitioners, under the influence of alcohol, indulged in violent activities, abused the public, and allegedly assaulted the Sub-Inspector.

The Judge said if the allegation in the FIR was true, it was cause for serious concern. Meenakshisundaram had earlier been implicated in a case and granted anticipatory bail. He had been suspended from college. Considering that he had not only abused a professor, but also allegedly assaulted a Sub-Inspector and the investigation was pending, the court said he was not entitled to bail.

As regards Raju, he was not implicated in the earlier case. He is said to have assaulted the SI. Further, he had not been suspended.

The court said Raju should be released on bail on executing a bond for Rs.10,000 with two sureties for a like sum, one of which should be furnished by his father or mother.

He should report before the respondent police daily at 7 p.m. for six weeks. Thereafter, he should be available for interrogation as and when required.
