Venting anger: Members of ABVP attempting to enter the Bangalore University Registrar’s office during the protest on Tuesday. Bangalore: The student protest in front of the Bangalore University’s examination wing on the Old Post Office Road took a violent turn on Tuesday after a few students tried to barge into the examination wing. More than 200 students from different colleges affiliated to Bangalore University, who were protesting under the banner of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), claimed that more than 80 per cent of those who had appeared for the fifth semester chemistry and biochemistry papers had failed. The protest turned ugly when a few students tried to barge into the examination wing, as the security guards on duty had locked the gate. In the melee, the university property was damaged as the students shook the rusty gate until it came off its hinges and raised slogans against the university. They alleged that the papers were not valued properly. Tammesh Gowda, ABVP’s State joint secretary, said: “Bright students, who have been scoring 60 per cent and above in other exams, have secured single-digit marks. How can that be? Moreover, since they have scored in single digits, they are ineligible to apply for revaluation. They now are forced to wait for one year to take the supplementary examination.” Mr. Gowda said that the Bangalore University is only conducting examinations and not declaring the results. The results, which are often inaccurate, are always declared late, he alleged. He said that the university should revoke the semester system, which was the main cause for all these problems. The Ulsoorgate police, who arrived at the spot, tried to pacify the activists, and told them not to vandalise the property. S.R. Vijay Kumar, Ulsoorgate Sub-Division ACP, told the students: “Whatever may be the reason, the students should not have vandalised the university property. There are channels that could have been explored.” Date extendedLater, the students met the Registrar (Evaluation) Radhakrishna and senior officials of the examination branch following which the Registrar decided to extend the date for submitting applications for obtaining photocopies of the answers scripts to March 25. “Get the papers valued by your lecturers. If they think that you should have scored more than the pass marks, you can approach our officials. We will then place the matter before the Syndicate and see if all the papers can be valued again either at a concession or free of cost,” he told the students. The students later submitted a written apology to the Registrar for vandalising the university property.
