Women SHGs save over Rs.37 crore

TIRUVANNAMALAI: The 14,201 women self-help groups in Tiruvannamalai district, having a membership of 2,28,810, have saved Rs.37,73,47,000 up to February 2008, according to G. Thamarai, District Revenue Officer (DRO), Tiruvannamalai.
Presiding over the International Women’s Day celebrations, organised by the Tamil Nadu Women’s Development Project (TNWDP), Tiruvannamalai, here on Wednesday, Mr. Thamarai said that 529 industry-based women’s SHGs were formed under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam in Tiruvannamalai district in 2007-08. The objective of the TNWDP is to strengthen the SHGs by forming federations of SHGs at the panchayat-level to enable the groups become independent.
Secretaries, joint secretaries and treasurers are formed for such federations and training given to them, he said.
A total of 12,045 women SHGs have been provided economic loans and revolving fund to the tune of Rs.11,378.60 lakh under the Swarnajayanthi Grama Swarozgar Yojana and the schemes of the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation (TAHDCO).
