This Day That Age
Mr. Walter Nash, Prime Minister of New Zealand, who is in New Delhi on a three-day State visit, on March 18 paid warm tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at a civic reception held in his honour at the “Dewan-i-Khas” in the Red Fort. Mr. Nash said, “The evident fact that Gandhi’s ideas survive and find expression throughout India and indeed beyond its borders and that his influence far from waning has actually grown since his tragic death, is at once a testimony to their vital and permanent force and importance and tribute to the genius of the Indian people, who have made these ideas their own. The New Zealand Prime Minister added that he wished to see the concepts of Ahimsa and Satyagraha that were among Gandhiji’s “most priceless gifts to the world” triumph. Mr. Nash said that New Zealand had learned a lot from Indians who had come to New Zealand as had the New Zealanders who had come to India. He hoped that his visit would help to strengthen the bonds of friendship and understanding between New Zealand and India.
