This Day That Age
The Madras Legislative Council on March 18 adopted the Madras Animal Preservation Bill, 1958, with some modifications. Dr. P. V. Cherian, Chairman, presided. The Bill sought to prohibit the slaughter of all bulls, bullocks, cows, calves, buffaloes and buffalo calves, unless a certificate from a competent authority appointed for the purpose had been obtained that the animal was fit for slaughter. Mr. M. Bhaktavatsalam, Home Minister, reiterated that there was no question of sentiment involved in the Bill which was purely an economic measure to conserve cattle wealth in the State.
