Krishnagiri: Members of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam (TNVS) affiliated to the Communist Party of India (CPI) blocked the four Roads here on Wednesday in support of their charter of demands.
As many as 142 persons including 32 women were arrested and later released in the evening. Among their demands included immediate disbursal of pension for farmers who had crossed the age of 58 and implementation of Kolappan committee recommendation on farmers’ reforms.
The members also urged the State Government to provide assistance to eligible farmers under the Tamil Nadu Agricultural Labourers-Farmers (Social Security Scheme). They asked the Government to initiate stringent action against traders and contractors who smuggled rice meant for supply under the food-for-work programme.
It should also provide identity cards to all eligible farmers. State council member CPI S. Kannu and taluk secretary K.C. Ramasamy led the protest.
