It can be stopped only with Deputy Commissioner’s permission DAVANGERE: Factories in the State cannot stop crushing sugarcane unless an order is issued by the Deputy Commissioner of the district concerned. According to a highly placed official in the Department of Agriculture, the Government has ordered all sugar factories to continue crushing cane. It can be stopped only for want of sugarcane, that too, after certification from the Deputy Commissioner. Many sugar factories had stopped crushing citing technical problems in the machinery, the source said, and added that if there was any problem in the factory, it should inform the Sugar Institute, Bangalore, which in turn would send a team of experts to the factory to sort out the problem. The team of experts would examine the problem and, if required, submit a report to the Government to allow the factory to stop crushing for a certain period. “If there is a minor problem, the team will suggest to the factory authorities to set it right within a stipulated time-frame and restore crushing work,” the source added. Prevention of lossesThese measures had been taken to ensure that all the sugarcane grown by farmers was crushed and farmers were not made to sustain losses, the official said.
