NEW DELHI: In view of the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2010, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has urged Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna to simplify the procedure for granting licences to guest houses. In a statement here, Mayor Arti Mehra proposed convening of a meeting of senior civic body representatives under the chairmanship of the L-G to discuss the policy. MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta said the inflow of visitors during the Games would require the provision of at least one-lakh residential units for board and lodging. “At present there are many guest houses in Karol Bagh and Sadar Paharganj zones that serve as budget hotels for tourists. There are similar establishments in other areas as well. If these are granted relevant licences then the problem of providing residential units during the Games will be resolved,” he added. MCD House leader Subhash Arya said the owners of guest houses presently have to provide clearances from various departments including the Building Department. “This causes inordinate delays in issuance of licences. The new procedure would allow owners of guest houses to acquire the licence promptly. Other departments like the Delhi police and the Fire Service would also be directed to issue no-objection certificates to owners within a prescribed time. The Municipal Commissioner is also being directed to order the Health Department to issue clearance to the guest houses in a time-bound manner.”
