SC/ST scholarships: decision withdrawn

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The Union Government has withdrawn its controversial decision to restrict post-matric scholarships only to those Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students who have secured 60 per cent marks in 12th standard examination.

Stipulation goes

It has also decided on not enforcing its old stipulation that only those studying under the “free seat” category in professional institutions are eligible for scholarships.

Baburao Mudabi, Commissioner, Social Welfare, said that a communication to this effect had been sent by D.K. Singh of the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Riders

The riders on higher education scholarships had triggered a controversy with many students’ organisations and political parties calling it a ploy to block access to higher education to a larger section of the Dalit community. They had demanded that scholarships be provided regardless of the marks they scored.
