NEW DELHI: Acute shortage of water in some parts of Delhi due to the stance adopted by Haryana and Uttar Pradesh resonated in the Delhi Assembly on Wednesday with BJP members raising the issue again. They also broke a pitcher outside the office of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. In the House, where the proceedings began smoothly after Speaker Prem Singh accepted the request of Opposition leader Jagdish Mukhi that the fine imposed on two BJP MLAs – Karan Singh Tanwar and Vijay Jolly – be re-considered, the water issue was raised by Prof. Mukhi. He said the officials of Delhi and Haryana had met the Prime Minister on Tuesday over the issue and urged Ms. Dikshit to inform the House about it. Ms. Dikshit said the meeting had been convened by the Prime Minister to resolve the issue. She said it was wrong to say that the talks had failed and added that it had been decided that some steps should be taken in the matter. The Chief Minister said officials of the Central Water Commission were part of the meeting. She quipped that the BJP MLAs who had been creating a ruckus on the issue over the past two days had been silent on the matter on Wednesday. This brought BJP members on their feet and Prof. Mukhi accused the Chief Minister of provoking MLAs who want to participate in the proceedings. In the din, all else was lost.
