Wide array: Visitors at the handloom expo in Bangalore on Wednesday.

Bangalore: The country’s multifarious handloom traditions will be on show at Harshakala, which was inaugurated by Sudhakar Rao, Chief Secretary, Government of Karnataka on Wednesday. The expo has been organised by the Commissioner for Textile Development and Director of Handlooms and Textiles, Government of Karnataka, and sponsored by the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.

Arvind G. Risbud, Secretary, Department of Commerce and Industries, presided over the function. As many as 108 handloom agencies from different parts of the country are participating in the expo. Mr. Rao went round the expo and spoke to a few participants who had already put up their stalls. The main objective of organising the national handloom expo is to provide a niche market for handloom products produced by Handloom Weavers Cooperative Societies. The expo helps increase the market for cotton, wool and silk handloom products. It also helps handloom products to compete with mill products. The consumer can buy handloom products directly from the producing agency at competitive prices and at the same time, the agency can get better value for its products, thereby providing continuous employment to the handloom weavers.

Ashok Kumar C. Manoli, Commissioner for Textile Development and Director of Handlooms and Textiles, Government of Karnataka, said that more than two lakh consumers are expected to visit the expo. The expo will be held at Bangalore Palace Grounds till April 2.
