On this day in 2003, an Israeli bulldozer in Gaza had killed Rachel Corrie, a young American student acting as a human shield while trying to stop the demolit ion of a Palestinian family home. The festival was dedicated to Rachel and other numerous martyrs of anti-imperialist struggles. A series of anti-imperialist films in different languages were screened. The Palestinian Ambassador to India, Osama Mousa, was the guest of honour on the inaugural day. “Rachel’s willingness, as a young US citizen, to confront and take responsibility for the US-sponsored genocide and ultimately pay the price of her life is an inspiration to us all,” said P. Kumar Mangalam, JNU Students’ Union convenor of the School. The Institute of Management Technology organised its convocation ceremony in Ghaziabad for the graduating batches of the Ghaziabad and Nagpur campuses earlier this week. N. R. Narayana Murthy, chairman of the Board of directors and Chief Mentor of Infosys Technologies, was the guest of honour and delivered the convocation address. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath, who is also the president of the Board, awarded the post-graduate degrees and diplomas. The theme of the five-day festival is water conservation. It was inaugurated by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit this past Monday. “The idea is to sensitise the youth and make them aware of the importance of water as a natural resource,” said DUSU president Amrita Bahri. A number of dance performances, songs, street plays and magic shows were showcased during the week. Aligarh Muslim University is going to revamp its M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes to improve the quality of research in the university. It will introduce a Common Entrance Test and hold interviews for admitting the candidates for the two programmes. A committee has been appointed to prepare a detailed framework for the same. This was decided at a meeting of the deans of all faculties presided over by Vice-Chancellor P. K. Abdul Azis held this week. AMU has also decided to review the semester system introduced at the post-graduate level and examine the possibility of implementing a grading system for evaluation. Parul Sharma
