ALAPPUZHA: Mild tension prevailed at Kidangara as activists of the Kerala State Karshaka Thozhilali (farm labourers’) Union (KSKTU) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) shouted slogans against each other after the latter launched a symbolic harvest there on Wednesday. The incident took place when the UDF leaders, including Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy, were leaving the venue. Nearly 30 union activists, including women, who were waiting nearby, started shouting slogans against the Opposition front and Mr. Chandy. With the activists standing close to Mr. Chandy’s vehicle, the police immediately formed a cordon around them. Mr. Chandy tried to pacify the UDF activists who began countering the union slogans. Mr. Chandy and the police managed to disperse the activists before they came to blows. The police were present at the venue right from the morning after a section of the media reported that the union was planning to prevent the Opposition front from going ahead with the symbolic harvest. However, the district leaders of the union had denied any such plans.
