CHANDIGARH: Students and teachers of Panjab University sat on dharna in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s office here on Wednesday demanding Central University status. Addressing the joint dharna, Panjab University Teachers’ Association secretary Manjit Singh said if the flow of funds from the Union Government amounted to dilution of Punjab’s claim over Chandigarh, as was being apprehended by the Punjab Government, then how come the entire Union Territory, including PGI and Punjab Engineering College, were allowed to be funded by the Union Government. He said on the one hand there was demand for a new Central University for Punjab by the Punjab Government, for which sites at Bathinda or Anandpur Sahib were under consideration, on the other the same people were reluctant to save Panjab University from the current financial crunch by allowing it to be fully funded by the Union Government. Parminder Jaswal, President of the Students’ Council, regretted the rigid attitude of the Punjab Government and threatened to intensify the struggle if Panjab University was not declared a Central university.
