THENI: Sothuparai dam has surplussed last night, thanks to good rain and heavy flow in major streams on Kodaikanal hill. A total of 63.54 cusecs of water has been overflowing from the dam as storage level crossed its total height of 126.42 feet. Rain fall recorded at the dam site was 36 mm. Water level rose by three feet in the dam within 24 hours. Heavy rain lashed Periakulam and nearby areas. Storage level remained static in Periyar dam as it has 116.5 foot of water. However, inflow in to the dam has been increased to 2,083 cusecs compared to inflow of 1,424 cusecs on Tuesday. Discharge from the dam was nil. Quantum of rainfall at the dam site was also reduced to half on Wednesday. Water release for irrigation was suspended since Monday. The power generating unit of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board at Goodalur was also stopped. Vaigai dam level upWater level in Vaigai dam shot up to 61.38 feet, up by one foot, thanks to steady inflow in to the dam for the past two days and heavy downpour on Varushanadu hill. Flow in the Kottakudi and Mullai Periyar rivers was comfortable. Forty-one cusecs of water has been discharged from the dam to maintain drinking water supply to Madurai. The dam received moderate showers. The combined Periyar credit stood at 3,950 mcft. Intensity of rain too has come down sharply as most of the areas in the district received half the rainfall recorded the previous day. Rainfall recorded at various places in mm: Mettupatti recorded a rainfall of 36.4 mm followed by Kallandiri and Sothuparai dam - 36 mm each, Madurai - 33, Viraganoor - 28.5, Sittampatti - 28, Tekkadi - 26, Vaigai dam - 24, Shanmuganadi - 21, Uthamapalayam and Manjalar dam - 20 mm each, Peranai - 17.6, Sattaiyar dam - 17.1, Veerapandi - 15, Marudhanadi - 14, Kuppanampatti - 13.2, Gudalur - 11, Thaniyamangalam - 10, Melur - 8.2 and Periyar dam and Pulipatti - 7 mm each. VirudhunagarRainfall recorded in various places in Virudhunagar district (in mm): Tiruchuzhi - 26.2, Virudhunagar - 23, Watrap - 21, Kariyapatti - 18.8, Srivilliputtur - 14.2, Aruppukottai - 11, Rajapalayam - 10.4, Sivakasi - 10.2, Sattur - 4 and Vembakottai - 2.9 mm.
