RTI applications increase four-fold

HYDERABAD: Applications under the Right to Information Act increased four-fold in the State and three-fold in rural areas during 2007, compared to its preceding year, according to Chief Information Commissioner C.D. Arha.

Talking to reporters after submitting the annual report for 2007 to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy here on Wednesday, he said the State Information Commission had maintained its numero uno position for the second consecutive year, by submitting the report on time.

Mr. Arha said the increase in the applications was due to various awareness programmes taken up by the government, tours undertaken by the commissioners, efforts made by non-governmental organisations. The print and electronic media did their bit. The applications received at the grassroots level increased from 3,000 to 8,500, while those received by the commission went up from 8,000 to more than 35,000.
